Puerto Rico’s Historic Equestrian Art
Take a beautiful hacienda surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Add handsome Paso Fino horses with regal names like Princesa de Carabalí (Carabalí Princess), decked out in gilded saddles and velvet blankets. Top them with professional riders wearing 18th century uniforms complete with tri-cornered hats and coats with lavish red trim. Watch as horses and riders execute steps and movements that resemble ballet and re-create the time of the Spanish caballeros in all their skill and finery. Listen to the background music of composer Angel “Cuco” Pena and view the lighting by Fernando Aguilú.
Welcome to the Friday evening exhibitions at the Puerto Rican School of Equestrian Art. The School was recently inaugurated at Hacienda Don Carmelo, located off Road 670 in the town of Vega Baja. Its goals are to develop and display Puerto Rico’s equestrian tradition -- its Paso Fino horses and the breeders, trainers and riders who work with them.
Every Friday at 8p.m., the School presents an hour-long show, described above, at Hacienda Don Carmelo. A very professional exhibition, it is open to the public: cost is $35 for adults, $20 for children under 10 and senior citizens. Because of limited space, for reservations - at 787-251-9474.
