Cabo Rojo: El Combate
The Cabo Rojo Lighthouse and Salt Flats.
In 1759 the locals fought with a neighboring town for the ownership of the salt flats, hence the name El Combate. You will find restaurants on the road and the beach area at the end of Rt. 3301. This beach, also called El Combate, is now part of the Boquerón Forest Reserve. Go farther south to reach the salt flats and the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse. If you have never seen how sea salt is harvested, now is your chance.
East of the isthmus that connects to the lighthouse, you can see the grid for the evaporation system as well as piles of harvested salt. This area is ecologically sensitive due to the great variety of birds that make this their last stop before flying to South America every year. Past all of this, to the very end, you park and walk to the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse.
The lighthouse is a classic example of the Spaniard's architectural style. Built in 1882, it is located in one of the most beautiful spots in the area. Close by you will find La Playuela, a nice beach with clear blue waters. How to go: Off Rt 101 from Boquerón, go south on Rt 301 and then west on Rt 3301 to reach El Combate Beach. Stay on Rt 301 to the end to reach the lighthouse and salt flats.
