Cayey
Major collection of paintings by Ramón Frade.
Cayey means lugar de las aguas (place of water) in the Indian language. The town is located in a fertile valley in the south of the Cordillera Central in La Sierra de Cayey. A number of rivers descend from the mountains in this area.
In the past, Cayey was an important coffee and tobacco center. Today, the University of Puerto Rico has a major campus in Cayey, featuring a number of avant-garde programs like the women's studies project (Projecto-Pro-mujer).
As always, you should start with the plaza. One end is dominated by the beautiful church. In the main area of the plaza you will find sculpted trees and strategically placed benches.
One particular museum of note is the Museo Dr. Pío López Martínez at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. The collection includes major works by the famous Puerto Rican painter Ramón Frade.
