Salsa music is exhilarating, particularly when you see it performed live. The following is a sample of some of the best live music clubs for salsa. You will find that once the music starts, the overpowering rhythm gets you dancing.
Miguel Damas turned his lifelong affection for salsa into the HABANA CLUB, the venue of choice for serious salsa aficionados. The two-story club in Santurce caters to a 25+ crowd and the live performances keep the dance floor packed. On Thursday and Friday nights Habana Club is beginner-friendly as it offers free salsa lessons from 8pm-10pm. (787) 722-1919
Salsa and oysters are a winning combination on Sunday nights at Isla Verde’s OYSTER BAR. At 10pm the orchestra, Salsa Clasica, will transport you back in time with some classic oldies, and unexpected visits by other local musicians lead to incredible impromptu jam sessions. Where do the New York salsa cats like Bobby Valentin go when in Puerto Rico? NUYORICAN CAFÉ in Old San Juan. On stage, every Wednesday at 10pm is the ten-piece Comborican house band performing 70’s-style salsa, and on Saturdays, the spotlight is on the Charan Junto and their charanga salsa style. The musical ensemble Common Sense, comprising six veteran musicians, performs Thursday-Saturday at the WYNDHAM EL SAN JUAN’S cozy yet elegant CHICO BAR. Another Saturday alternative for salsa searchers is the LAGOON LOUNGE AT THE EMBASSY SUITES HOTEL in Isla Verde. The spacious venue boasts an enormous bar that observes happy hour. For the past nine years, RUMBA has been one of Old San Juan’s hottest hangouts. It’s where people of all ages, tourists and locals alike, come to experience live salsa at its best. Rumba presents four nights of live music with a different ensemble taking the stage each night. The last weekend of the month, Rumba hosts La Cura Festival.
