Experience the Central Beauty
Cayey, Comerío, Morovis
If you’re looking for a cooling break from the beach, you can take a day trip into the mountains for a mix of the culture and environment unique to this area. The 20 municipalities in the Central region can be thought of as being along two driving routes (with San Juan as the starting point). The Southern route begins in Caguas and travels through Aguas Buenas, Gurabo, San Lorenzo, Cidra, Cayey, Aibonito, Comerío, Barranquitas, Orocovis, and Villalba before ending in Adjuntas. The Northern route goes from Naranjito to Corozal, Morovis, Ciales, Florida, Lares, Utuado and Jayuya. The Southern route covers a good bit of the Luis Muñoz Marín Panoramic Route.
Cayey The home of the “coquí dorado” (golden coquí), Cayey means “Lugar de las Aguas” (many water place) in the Indian language. The town is located in a fertile valley in the south of the Cordillera Central in La Sierra de Cayey. A number of rivers descend from the mountains in this area. In the past, Cayey was an important coffee and tobacco center. Today, the University of Puerto Rico has an important campus in Cayey, featuring a number of avant-garde programs like the women's studies project (projecto-Pro-mujer). As always, you should start with the plaza. One end is dominated by the beautiful church. In the main area of the plaza you will find sculpted trees and strategically placed benches. One particular museum of note is the Museo Dr. Pío López Martínez at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. The collection includes major works by the famous Puerto Rican painter Ramón Frade.
Comerío This gracious town is surrounded by Aguas Buenas, Barranquitas, Cidra and Naranjito. As you would expect, this deep into the Cordillera Central, you will find a number of natural attractions and sights. To start with, the Río La Plata (the longest river in Puerto Rico) runs right through town. It is just a short walk from the plaza. From the plaza walk around and behind the church and around the block. Here you will find a newly refurbished area and the firehouse with a beautifully maintained, classic fire truck. As you check the directory, you will see caves to visit (by appointment only), a nearby waterfall and a panoramic overlook.
Morovis Founded in 1818 and located just 50 miles from San Juan, Morovis offers beautiful views of the mountains and the flatlands that run to the sea. On the Plaza Juan Evangelista Rivera is a Catholic church founded in 1823. The Panadería Patria is one of the oldest bakeries in Puerto Rico with its famous "pan de la patita echá" (braided bread). Part of the Patron Saint Festivities (in July) include the "Carnaval Moroveño." You are invited to participate. This town is also well known for the artisans building "cuatros." This is a special guitar-style instrument famous throughout Puerto Rico. In fact, there is an annual festival, the "Festival de Cuatristas y Trovadores," celebrating the artisans that make and use these instruments.
