Dorado,

In the North, just outside of San Juan, are the towns of Dorado (famous for PGA-quality golf), Toa Alta (one of the oldest towns in Puerto Rico), Toa Baja (home to the Isla de Cabras across from El Morro), Vega Alta (Balneario de Cerro Gordo), Vega Baja (Reserva Natural Laguna Tortuguero), Manatí (the Athens of Puerto Rico) and Barceloneta (with the Cambalache Forest). Farther away, the northwestern towns of Quebradillas, Camuy, Hatillo and Arecibo offer prime tourist attractions, such as the breathtaking Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy, the largest radio telescope in the world in Arecibo, the annual mask festival in Hatillo and the legendary Panadería bakery in Quebradillas.

In April and May, Dorado will be in the spotlight. The Island’s oldest resort town outside of San Juan hosts the 35th annual Heineken Golf Classic Tournament—the Puerto Rico Golf Association’s most important event. Expected to join the more than 200 competitors are Larry Borges and Seth Bull. A total of five top golf courses have made Dorado name brand in the golfing world. Dorado also features an art and history museum, the Momumento a las Raíces sculpture (in the plaza), and the home and art of painter Marcos J. Alegria.

Another important sporting event in April is the VI Clásico in Toa Baja, a two-part bike race, beginning with timed runs on a closed circuit and finishing with an 8k race in town. Toa Baja’s major attractions include the Isla de Cabras and the small fortress El Cañuelo located there.

Vega Alta hosts the Festival de la Chiringa in April. Chiringa is the local word for kite, so if you enjoy seeing handmade kites flying in competition, a kite exposition and awards given for the best-looking kites, come to Vega Alta. The town is also known for its ongoing sugar production, the Vega Alta Forest and the Balneario de Cerro Gordo.

Since you are nearby, you might want to visit Manatí. This town prides itself on having one of the most important historic sites on the Island at the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Church, which has been named a National Historic Monument. The nearby beaches of Los Tubos and Mar Chiquita are very popular.

In May, make sure you visit Camuy, home to the Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy, for its annual Patron Saint Festival. Live music, local food specialties and sport competitions are waiting for you. Once in the area, don’t miss a trip to the Cavernas, a startlingly beautiful cave formation providing a day of fun for the entire family. A trolley takes you to the entrance of the main cave for a short hike along a paved walkway that leads you to the bottom of a giant sinkhole. The trip back up features a look at the part of the Camuy River that actually flows underground through the cave. This is a perfect day trip, which is easy to combine with a stop at the Arecibo Telescope.
