In the North, just outside of San Juan, are the towns of Dorado (a golfer’s dream), Toa Alta (home of the musician Tomás “Masso” Rivera), Toa Baja (Balneario Punta Salinas), Vega Alta (Vega Alta Forest), Vega Baja (Reserva Natural Laguna Tortuguero), Manatí (the Athens of Puerto Rico) and Barceloneta (with the Cambalache Forest mountain bike trails). Farther away, the northwestern towns of Camuy, Hatillo and Arecibo offer prime tourist attractions, such as the Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy and the largest radio telescope in the world in Arecibo.

Toa Alta (AB/7)
Founded in 1751, Toa Alta is one of the oldest towns on the Island. The construction of the historic Parroquia San Fernando Rey (in the plaza) started one year later in 1752.

Toa Baja (AB/7)
As you stand at El Morro (in Old San Juan) and look due west to the small island (Isla de Cabras) and fort (Fortín El Cañuelo - a great vantage point to watch the cruise ships passing) on the other side of San Juan Bay, you are looking at Toa Baja.

Dorado (AB/7)
Robert Trent Jones, Sr., designed four of the Dorado golf courses, and they are considered to be among the top 25 courses he produced in his career. More recently Chi Chi Rodríguez (the famous Puerto Rican golfer) redesigned the Dorado del Mar course.

Vega Alta (AB/7)
Founded in 1775, historical points of interest include the Iglesia Católica Inmaculada Concepción de María. For naturalists and hikers, the Vega Alta Forest offers plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs.

Vega Baja (AB/6)
On the Plaza de Recreo José F. Náter you will find a beautiful church with a domed ceiling and the Casa Cultura y Turismo, a good place to arrange a tour of Vega Baja. The Reserva Natural Laguna Tortuguero is a must-stop for any naturalist.

Manatí (AB/6)
Manatí has a rich architectural, artistic and literary heritage, and its name, the “Athens of Puerto Rico,” traces back to the early 1900’s when Manatí was the literary capital of the Island. Natural attractions include Playa Los Tubos, Playa Mar Chiquita, Playa La Esperanza and Playa La Poza de las Mujeres.

Barceloneta (AB/5)
Established in 1881, Barceloneta was one of the last towns founded by the Spanish. An important natural asset in Barceloneta is the 375-hectare Bosque Estatal de Cambalache which offers camping, mountain bike trails, and 4 miles (6 km) of walking trails.

Arecibo (AB/4)
Founded in 1515, Arecibo is now home to the world’s largest radio telescope. There is an observation deck and hands-on exhibits covering interstellar science. East of town, the 1898 lighthouse is still in use and has recently been renovated with a new recreational facility.

Hatillo (AB/3)
Founded in 1823, the town is best known for the annual “Festival de las Máscaras” and the Paso Fino horses. The mask festival has been held annually on December 28 since 1823.

Camuy (AB/3)
Camuy is famous for the Parque de las Cavernas del Río Camuy, a major cave system. At the park, you put yourself in the hands of the excellent guides for an informative tour of this natural wonder. The visitors center has walking trails, food facilities and a souvenir shop. This trip is not to be missed.
