Founded in 1772, Bayamón was named after a Cacique Indian. Bayamón is also called “La Ciudad del Chicharrón” (Fried Pork Skin City) because of the production and distribution of chicharrón, a favorite Puerto Rican snack, which started in this town.
The city’s historic zone includes a plaza, church and mall. Today, with all its famous artists, museums and theaters, this is one of the most progressive cities in Puerto Rico.
Close to downtown is the Parque de las Ciencias Luis A. Ferré. This science park features museums, an amphitheater, a planetarium and the Space Rockets Plaza. This is a real treat for the kids. Other good stops include the Museo de Archivo e Historia de Bayamón (for information on the history and development of the city) and the Museo de Arte Francisco Oller. If you are up for romantic music under the stars, come and enjoy the Noche de Nostalgia y Bohemias (the last Friday of each month).
