Welcome to Puerto Rico – the Caribbean’s grandest shopping destination. Although the Island may be small in size, it’s big when it comes to retail. Within its 100- x 35-mile borders are dozens of shopping centers, including megamall Plaza Las Américas with approximately 300 stores. Puerto Rico is also host to two major outlet malls and various shopping districts.
If you’re a serious shopper, you’re in good company because Puerto Ricans love to shop, especially when it comes to high-end merchandise.
At the heart of San Juan’s shopping is the Plaza Las Américas, the largest shopping center in the Caribbean. The multilevel, “Plaza” as it is affectionately known, is like a cultural and artistic center displaying a unique décor reminiscent of the Island’s discovery.
The tourist district of Condado is famous for its various chic stores, and 1054 Ashford Ave. is the Caribbean’s most luxurious address. This upscale mini-mall is host to posh boutiques: Mont Blanc, maker of high-quality writing instruments and accessories; Cartier, creator of exquisite jewelry, watches and fragrances; Louis Vuitton, fashion and leather goods designer; S. Villar Jewelers and the peaceful Zen Spa & Health Studio.
For a truly unique purchase, Condado and the adjacent Santurce area are great places to buy designer fashion created by internationally recognized local talent. Nono Maldonado, David Antonio, Lisa Capalli, and Harry Robles are just a few of the designers who have launched San Juan as a fashion capital.
For good deals head to Old San Juan which boasts a handful of name-brand factory outlet stores such as Polo, Coach, Dooney & Bourke and Guess. At Bared, Club Jibarito and Hellenis, where you’ll find the world’s finest jewelry and most prestigious watches. Another well-known Old San Juan jewelry store is Joyería Riviera<>./b For elegant tableware it is Pavillon Christofle.
For quality goods, you may have to look no farther than your hotel lobby, as many of the major hotels in the Condado and Isla Verde tourist districts have stores. Keep in mind that there is no sales tax in Puerto Rico except on jewelry.
