San Juan: Río Piedras
Home of the University of Puerto Rico and the exquisite Botanical Gardens.

Río Piedras, the sector of San Juan which is just south of the Golden Mile banking district of Hato Rey, is perhaps best known as the heart and soul of Puerto Rico’s major institution of higher learning, the University of Puerto Rico and the botanical gardens.

Although there are significant branches throughout the Island, including one in Mayagüez (noted for its engineering graduates), the main campus of the UPR with its distinctive clock tower is located in Río Piedras.

A few miles up the road from the university is the National Botanical Garden of Puerto Rico. This very large, diverse and beautiful garden is open to the public and well worth visiting.
