San Juan: Santurce
A major performing arts center.
Across the lagoon from the Condado, Santurce is enjoying a booming rebirth due to generous tax incentives designed to encourage economic development. And as a result, a large number of apartments and office buildings are under construction; and stores and restaurants are being lured back into the area along with many new residents. All of this activity is bringing about a renaissance of the area.
Of course any renaissance requires a cultural center and Santurce already has two major facilities. The first is the Puerto Rico Museum of Art with its sculpture garden (it is the last stop on the new Urban Train). The museum is the major repository for over 500 years of Puerto Rican art.
The second major facility is the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré, home to the world-famous Casals Festival each winter and a number of major events throughout the year.
