Yabucoa is known as the "Pueblo de la Yuca" (the Cassave Town).


Yabucoa is known as the "Pueblo de la Yuca" (the Cassave Town) and the "Ciudad del Azúcar" (Sugarcane City). At one time, there were six sugar mills that operated in this area. One of the most important was Central Roig.

In 1909 the Yabucoa Sugar Company bought the mill (which is close to the Guayanex River) and changed the name to Central Roig. This sugar mill was in operation until 1981.

Today, in the town of Yabucoa you can visit the Casa de la Cultura y Museo. This museum and cultural center offers information on the history of the town, an exposition area, a library and the Museo Indígena. At the Museo Indígena you can see archeological findings from the Igneri-Talaloide culture discovered in Yabucoa in 1995.

>How to go:
The most direct route from San Juan is Rt 52 to Rt 30 to Rt 53 (in Humacao); take Rt 53 south to the exit for Yabucoa (Rt 53 is still under construction).
